Fish release ammonia into the water through their urine, feces, and gills. Ammonia is extremely toxic to fish and must be removed from the aqua-culture system via the "Nitrification Cycle".
Inside your biological filter, Nitrosomonas bacteria convert toxic ammonia to toxic nitrite. Nitrobacter bacteria then convert the toxic nitrite to relatively NON-toxic nitrate - this is known as the "Nitrification Cycle".
